Bolsa Família will undergo changes starting in 2021

The creation of the Citizen Income program was scrapped due to a lack of agreement between Congressional leaders and the government. Therefore, starting in January, with the end of emergency aid, the Bolsa Família program will continue to be paid.

This decision was made after conversations between parliamentarians and the Ministers of Economy, Paulo Guedes, of the Government Secretariat, Eduardo Ramos and President Bolsonaro.

The Bolsa Família program is expected to be expanded starting in February to include the population left unassisted by the end of emergency aid. However, this will be conditional on budgetary leeway, according to the government.

Budget for 2021

The source also said that the assessment made in the latest conversations showed the need to reinforce the Government's commitment to fiscal discipline.

Due to this tight scenario in Congress, only the Budget Guidelines Law (LDO) is expected to be voted on in 2020.

The approval of the project is very important to prevent the public sector from being paralyzed at the beginning of 2021.

Senator Márcio Bittar (MDB-AC), rapporteur of the spending cut proposals, expected Renda Cidadão to be added to the report, but it was discarded.

Bittar's report will only show spending cuts, for example:

  • Cut tax breaks;
  • Dwindling of public funds;
  • Introduction of triggers in public services.

Now, it's necessary to make room in the budget to discuss how the increased spending on social programs will be implemented. Bolsa Família serves approximately 20 million people.
