What is Social Rent?

It is a social benefit intended for families who do not have housing and cannot afford rent.

The main target audience for this program are families who live in high-risk areas or have lost access to housing as a result of a public calamity.

A recent example of such a situation is that of the families of Petrópolis. The city has been hit by heavy rains in recent months.

Many buildings were destroyed, and a state of public emergency was declared. Recently, the city government reported that it has already paid more than 1,400 social rent payments to families who lost their homes.

One of the main features of this benefit is its urgency. A family going through a situation like this can't afford to wait a long time and go through all the bureaucracy that other programs, for example, face. Brazil Aid.

How does Social Rent work?

This benefit is paid monthly and may undergo some changes depending on the city hall of each city, including the amounts.

The beneficiary family receives a cash amount corresponding to the cost of rent. The subsidy has a fixed term, that is, 12 months.

However, it can be extended depending on the household's financial situation when the term ends.

A new assessment will be carried out, and if it is proven that the beneficiaries are unable to afford housing, the Social Rent may be extended for that family.

What is the price of Social Rent?

There is no single value for each family, as the financial conditions of each one are assessed.

However, there is a maximum amount of R$500.00, meaning that no family receives more than this amount.

In municipalities where rental houses cost less than R$400.00, the family can pay in full.

However, in larger cities, where rent is more expensive and exceeds R$1,4,500.00, they'll have to shell out the rest. But the value helps a lot!

Who is entitled?

As already mentioned, the benefit is intended for a specific group, furthermore, these families still need to meet other criteria in order to be eligible for the program, which are:

  • Families registered with Cadúnico;
  • Brazil Aid Beneficiaries;
  • Families in poverty or extreme poverty.

Furthermore, the benefit also serves families who need to leave their homes in a hurry, in view of the PAC (Acceleration and Growth Program) projects.

Even if you don't live in a high-risk area or the city isn't in a state of public calamity, you're still entitled to the benefit.

This is because it also serves people who need to ensure the protection of their right to housing.

Social Rent is nothing more than an assistance benefit, therefore, it applies to art. 203 of the Federal Constitution.

Among the article's rules, we want to emphasize the following: social assistance will be provided to those who need it.

Above all, it aims to protect families, children, the elderly and adolescents, in fact, needy children and adolescents.

Therefore, if you need assistance because you are unable to access decent housing, know that you are also entitled to Social Rent.

Why is there no Social Rent in my city?

This program was created in the state of São Paulo during Marta Suplicy's administration. At the time, it was intended to serve families removed from the São Vito building.

Since then, it has spread to other regions of the state and also the country, but it is not yet present throughout the national territory.

However, some city halls have programs similar to Social Rent to help low-income families who do not have housing.

To find out if there is any similar support in your city, go to city hall or a Cadúnico office and ask.

Don't be afraid or embarrassed to ask. These benefits aren't always explicitly publicized, so many people who need them end up not knowing about this benefit.

Therefore, your city may have this benefit, but with a different name and characteristics.

How to apply?

The request can be made at the city hall or at the Cadúnico office in your city.

Typically, these benefits are only granted to families already registered with Cadúnico, as this is where they have control and know whether the family meets the necessary requirements.

So, if you are not yet registered, look for a Cadúnico or CRAS office in your city and register.

In addition to Social Rent, your family can benefit from other benefits, for example, Auxílio Brasil, Vale Gás, BPC, etc.

Conclusion

The Federal Government has some social programs that aim to improve the quality of life of low-income families and provide support in adverse situations, Social Rent is one of them.
