Is it possible to retire without ever having contributed?

A very common question among people is: is it possible to retire without ever having contributed to the INSS?

So, the answer to this question is “yes”, since it is possible to be entitled to a retirement of R$ 998.00 even without ever having contributed to Social Security.

However, people who are entitled to this benefit must be over 65 years of age or, of any age, if they have some type of long-term disability, which may be physical, mental, intellectual or sensory in nature.

Furthermore, as this is a Federal Government benefit, it is essential that beneficiaries come from low-income families.

Furthermore, it consists of a benefit from the National Institute of Social Services, also called BPC LOAS.

What is BPC LOAS?

The acronym BPC stands for Continuous Benefit Payment, in turn, the acronym LOAS stands for Organic Law of Social Assistance.

So, this “area” of Social Security was created as a way to serve the elderly and people with disabilities, offering amounts of up to a minimum wage, to support them in their daily lives.

In this way, the benefit is granted to elderly people over 65 years of age and people with disabilities who are able to prove that they are unable to work to earn their own income.

Broadly speaking, it works like retirement, as the only difference is that with BPC LOAS there is no payment of the thirteenth salary, something that is common for ordinary retirees and pensioners.

Who is entitled to BPC Loas?

Obviously, there are some requirements to be entitled to the minimum wage offered by BPC Loas, and they are:

  • You must be Brazilian born or naturalized;
  • Family income per person must be less than ¼ of the current minimum wage;
  • It is necessary for the beneficiary and his/her entire family to be registered with CadÚnico;
  • In the case of elderly people, the age must be equal to or greater than 65 years, for both men and women;
  • In the case of disability, it is necessary to prove the long-term impediment to work (minimum 2 years), whether intellectual, physical, mental or sensory in nature.

How to apply for BPC Loas?

First, you must register with CRAS, the Social Assistance Reference Center, as it is the gateway to this type of benefit.

Therefore, when you go there, simply fill out the form with some personal information and go through the financial assessment process.

Then, you need to make the BPC Loas request through the portal MY INSS, then just follow the steps below:

  • Access the account within the portal;
  • Click on “scheduling/application”;
  • Select “new application”;
  • Then “welfare benefits”;
  • So, “Assistance benefit for people with disabilities” or “Social benefit for the elderly”;
  • Filling in the data requested within the platform.

Therefore, the INSS will analyze the information, calling on the applicant to provide new considerations regarding the requirements that grant the benefit.

In the case of a person with a disability, it will be necessary to undergo a medical examination.

However, if the benefit is denied, it is possible to appeal the decision to the INSS or even in court.
