What is PIS?

First, it's very important to understand what PIS is, so that you understand its need and discover its real value – beyond the money itself.

Therefore, PIS, the Social Integration Program, is a system whose main objective is to transfer income to low-income workers through a cash contribution that companies make to public coffers.

As a result of this contribution, unemployment insurance and salary bonus payments are financed, covering this income transfer already mentioned.

You'll often see the acronym linked to two others, PASEP and NIT, which, in short, also offer the same type of income distribution, but focused on different segments of workers: public employees and the self-employed.

What is PIS for?

When you check your PIS using your CPF – or another method – you will be seeing a combination of financial resources that aim to contribute to the social development of workers through benefits.

Therefore, such amounts, when paid by employers (companies) throughout Brazil, are being used to cover these benefits, which, as already mentioned, are unemployment insurance and salary bonuses.

Right to PIS: who has it?

To know if you are entitled to the benefit, that is, before checking your PIS using your CPF or any other means, you need to be sure whether you are entitled to it or not.

However, the rule is quite simple: every person employed by a private company and registered under the CLT regime has a PIS number. And it's thanks to this number, as you've already seen, that you have access to these employment benefits.

Throughout the years, you or another worker may be entitled to a salary bonus, which, given the necessary comparisons, works like a 14th annual salary.

To be eligible for this and your unemployment insurance, in case the worst happens and you need to leave your job – which is important and no one really expects to need it – you need:

  • Have worked with a signed employment contract for at least 30 days in the previous year;
  • Having received, on average, up to 2 minimum wages per month during this period (approximately R$2,600.00 reais);
  • However, you will need to have been enrolled in the program for at least 5 years.

What is the difference between PIS, NIS, NIT and PASEP?

You already know what PIS is, but what about NIS and PASEP, what are their functions, now that you know what the first one is for and you know which worker niches each one serves.

Therefore, this article topic will explain this, starting with PASEP, which is an acronym for the Public Servant's Asset Formation Program and works in the same way as PIS.

The NIS (Social Identification Number) is a social security number assigned by Caixa Econômica Federal to identify individuals registered in government social programs.

And, according to Caixa, “a PIS registration is a NIS registration with employment relationship information”, which makes your NIS number the same as your PIS.

However, the NIT (Worker Identification Number) is used for workers without formal employment. Therefore, your NIT (Number of Employees) replaces your PIS (Social Security Number) in this case.
