THE DNI (National Identity Document) is one of the Government's actions to accelerate digitalization in Brazil.

In this way, the Government understands that more citizens can benefit from this practice, as they have easier access to services that previously took months to obtain, among other advantages.

What is DNI?

The DNI is part of the ICN, the National Civil Identification program. It was created to implement an integrated identification system for Brazilians.

In other words, the National Identity Document will be standardized. There will be a single code where the main document numbers of Brazilians will be stored, for example:

  • ID;
  • CPF;
  • Voter Registration Card;
  • Work Card;
  • Driver's License;
  • NIS/PIS/PASEP;
  • Birth and/or Marriage Certificate;
  • Military Certificate;
  • National Health Card;
  • Blood Type.

In addition, the digital document may also contain medical information related to illnesses and drug intolerances, as long as there is medical proof.

People with ASD can also add the autism symbol to their ID card, for example.

What are the advantages of the National Identity Document?

Most certainly, the National Identity Document will simplify the lives of Brazilians. 

One example is that it will no longer be necessary to carry several documents in your wallet or purse, as in just one document, it will be possible to find all the information necessary to carry out various procedures.

This will save us time, speed up service, reduce queues, accelerate processes and be more economical too.

With the DNI it will be easier to prove that the person is who they say they are, and it will certainly reduce the opportunities for fraud and scams.

It will certainly be advantageous and safe for both the person providing care and the person being served.

Besides that, we know that the implementation of this initiative is a step forward for digitalization, and digitalization is the future and brings many benefits to the population, as they are positive consequences of technology!

Does the DNI replace any document?

No. The National Identity Document It does not replace any documents, it just brings them all together in one place to make identification easier.

Citizens who do not yet have the documents or need to obtain a duplicate will have to do so the traditional way.

The DNI was not created to replace any identification document, only to facilitate the carrying and presentation of these documents.

Who can get a DNI?

THE digital DNI document can only be requested by people whose fingerprints have been entered into the National Civil Identification Database.

In other words, only those who have already had their biometrics taken at the Electoral Court or at partner identification institutes.

Do I need to pay to issue the National Identity Document?

No. The process is completely free and digital. However, Brazilians who encounter difficulties issuing their DNI through the app can complete the process at a post office.

This document will be generated through the application available for Android and IOS.

Is the National Identity Document mandatory?

The DNI began to be issued on March 1st, some states had already been testing the application for a longer time, for example, Acre.

At the moment, the DNI is not mandatory and is being gradually implemented across the states.

However, the Government's plan is for this document to become common and popular among Brazilians, and there will possibly be actions to encourage the issuance of the DNI.

How to get a DNI?

For now, the digital document is in the testing phase; only employees of the Electoral Court and other public bodies have access to the application.

In addition, residents of Minas Gerais also began testing the app in August.

The miners were chosen to test the document due to a cooperation agreement signed at the end of last year.

Citizens of other states will also be able to issue the digital document from February 2023.

Therefore, if you have any problem to resolve regarding your documentation, it is best to do so immediately, so that everything is in order in your National Identity Document.

Don't forget that you will need to have biometric registration. If you haven't done so yet, contact the Regional Electoral Court in your state and request biometric registration.
