First installment of the 13th salary is released this Friday

The National Social Security Institute (INSS) begins paying the first installment of the 13th this Friday (24) for retirees and pensioners.

The payment, which normally takes place in July, was brought forward this year as a way to reduce the impact of Covid-19, a disease caused by the new coronavirus, on Brazil's economy.

For those who receive the amount of a minimum wage, the advance deposit will be made between April 24th and May 8th, according to the final number of the benefit, without taking into account the verification digit.

In turn, insured individuals who have a monthly income above the national minimum wage will have their payments credited between May 4th and 8th, according to the 2020 payment schedule.

For those who earn up to a minimum wage:

More than 35.6 million people will receive the first installment of their 13th salary in April.

Across the country, around 35.6 million people will receive this benefit in April, according to the INSS.

Of this total, approximately 30.7 million beneficiaries will receive the first installment of the 13th salary, which is equivalent to R$1,400,000.00 (R$23.7 billion).

In turn, according to the calendar, the second installment will be paid between May 25th and June 5th.

Who is entitled?

According to the INSS, "By law, anyone who received a retirement benefit, survivor's pension, sickness benefit, accident benefit, or imprisonment benefit during the year is entitled to the 13th salary. In the event of a planned cessation of the benefit, scheduled before December 31, 2020, the beneficiary will be paid a proportional amount of the annual bonus."

Those who receive welfare benefits, such as Lifetime Monthly Income – RMV and Continuous Benefit Payment of the Organic Law of Social Assistance – BPC/LOAS, are not entitled to this 13th salary.

Closed agencies

In-person services at INSS agencies have been interrupted due to the coronavirus and the agencies will be closed until the 30th, with the possibility of extension.
