Recently, the Federal Government has been considering the possibility of extending unemployment insurance payments, potentially offering two additional monthly installments to workers who are laid off during the coronavirus pandemic.

If approved, this alternative would serve as another measure to help workers who have been suffering due to the impacts of the current economic crisis.
In this way, the proposal will benefit an average of six million people, even though it will have an impact on public coffers of approximately R$ 16.7 billion.
Therefore, even if the Federal Government has unforeseen expenses related to addressing and combating the new coronavirus pandemic, also considering the State of Public Calamity Decree, the Ministry of Economy may still consider this measure to be under study.
Understand this benefit.
Unemployment insurance is a benefit created by the Federal Government with the goal of ensuring a minimum income for workers governed by the Consolidation of Labor Laws (CLT) who have been unexpectedly dismissed without just cause.
Thus, today, three to five installments of the benefit are offered; the amount available to each worker depends on their length of service and how many times the insurance has been requested.
Furthermore, to be considered, the employee must meet the following requirements:
- Being a formal or domestic worker who is dismissed without just cause or indirectly dismissed;
- Formal worker with a suspended employment contract to participate in a professional qualification course or program;
- Professional fisherman during the closed season;
- Worker rescued from slave labor conditions.
Expansion of unemployment insurance
According to the proposal presented, all Brazilian workers who are dismissed without just cause between March 20 and December 31 will be eligible to receive two extra installments of the benefit.
Therefore, if the measure is approved, those who are laid off during this period may be entitled to 5 to 7 installments of unemployment insurance.
When applying for the benefit, it is essential that the unemployed person does not have extra income and does not receive any type of continuous benefit payment from the... Social Security, with the sole exception of survivor's pension.
It should be noted that the worker must have provided services to the company for a minimum period of 6 months in order to be eligible for the benefit.
Furthermore, there must be a 16-month interval between one application and another. It's also important to remember that the amount of unemployment insurance will depend on the length of employment.
