170,000 policyholders will be called for a new INSS fine-tooth comb assessment

The National Social Security Institute (INSS) has announced that it will summon those who have been receiving temporary disability benefits (formerly known as sickness benefits) for more than 6 months for a new medical examination.

The thorough review will take place between August and December and is expected to assess 170,000 beneficiaries whose payments have no end date.

The summons letters will be sent this week, via mail, to the address registered in the INSS system. Beneficiaries may also receive electronic messages or notifications at self-service terminals of banking institutions.

The purpose of the assessment is to prevent the improper payment of benefits. After being notified of the summons, the insured person must schedule a medical examination at one of the Social Security agencies within 30 days. Scheduling can be done through the Meu INSS app, the website, or by calling 135.

The examination will be conducted during extraordinary hours, that is, outside the normal timeframe for carrying out the tests. The decision aims to avoid disruption to already scheduled appointments, since the average time between the scheduling date and the examination is 39 days.

Each expert will be able to conduct up to 4 extra examinations per day. Furthermore, the INSS (Brazilian National Social Security Institute) is studying the possibility of holding task forces to expedite the review process, which should include opportunities for initial benefit assessments.
