In short, beneficiaries who participated as candidates in the 2020 municipal elections or made campaign donations will be removed from the program or have their payments temporarily canceled.

Based on cross-referenced data from the Superior Electoral Court (TSE), the Federal Court of Accounts (TCU), and the Single Registry (CadÚnico), which gathers information on families eligible to receive payments from social programs, the government will carry out the cancellation and blocking of benefits.

In a statement published in December, the TSE (Superior Electoral Court) reported that 91,500 beneficiaries of emergency aid or Bolsa Família (a social welfare program) used funds from these social programs as donations to the 2020 municipal election campaigns. The total amount reached R$ 77.5 million.

Bolsa Família cancelled

As of January 2021, social program payments will be canceled if any member of the family unit has been elected in the municipal elections or has been a candidate in the elections, declaring assets exceeding R$ 30 thousand to the Electoral Court.

The following month, in February, it will be time to cancel payments for those families in which a member has donated monthly amounts per person equal to or greater than two minimum wages to an election campaign, or in cases where a member has provided services to a campaign and, during this period, received monthly per capita amounts equal to or greater than two minimum wages.

Despite these new requirements, those whose payments were canceled may appeal the decision.

In this case, it is sufficient to present the necessary clarifications to the government, through the municipalities, proving that the conditions required to continue receiving the benefit are met.

Temporary suspension of Bolsa Família benefits.

In the case of temporary suspension, the provisional cut in the benefit program will affect families that had members donating monthly amounts between half and two minimum wages to election campaigns, or that had a member who provided services in campaigns and received equal amounts during the time they were active.

So, the temporary block will be a kind of thorough check, to confirm any irregularities.

Therefore, families will have until May to update their registration and prove that they are legally eligible to receive the benefit. If the matter is not clarified by the deadline, the benefit will be canceled.
