The Government maintains a database called Cadastro Único (CadÚnico) which is used to identify families living in poverty or extreme poverty in Brazil.

The data is used to include these families in public policies and social programs that are created by municipalities, states and the Union.

Through the CadÚnico, the government has access to important information, such as the employment status and income of families, as well as their level of education and even how many people work in that household.

Since 2003, the program has been used as the primary tool for selecting and enrolling low-income families into federal programs.

Therefore, it functions as a kind of gateway for these families to access various public policy programs.
